The Sphere is a temporary installation in Battery Park located on the southern tip of Manhattan, New York. The Sphere originally stood in the Austin Tobin Plaza between the two World Trade Center towers as a symbol of world peace. After the disaster of 9/11, The Sphere was recovered from the wreckage, intact but having suffered substantial damage from falling debris. Eventually, it was decided to install the sculpture in Battery Park as a memorial to the disaster considering it was one of the very little items they had left from this life-changing event. In front of The Sphere is an Eternal Flame. The Sphere is certainly affiliated to the cultural heritage category due to its historical importance.
