"This latest Volunteering Matters" conference was attended by over thirty participants active in various community organizations based throughout the Lower Laurentians.

larger_img_3417_0.jpgThe morning session was led by Kira Page, facilitator and outreach coordinator from the Centre for Community Organizations (COCo) and focused on attracting young people as volunteers.

This was an interesting discussion that included very useful explanation of how groups can use social media, especially Facebook, to promote events and find volunteers.

The afternoon session was presented by Juniper Belshaw, also a COCo facilitator and coordinator for funding development and contracts, who led the participants on the topics of recruiting directors, keeping volunteers engaged and broadening community representation.

The changing demographics of the region and other local challenges for organizations, such as the vast distances between communities in the Laurentians such as travel difficulties, that can impact on participation, were discussed.

This series of eight booklets is available from QAHN by calling (819) 564-9595, toll free 1-877-964-0409, or through QAHN's website, QAHN has also published a Guide to Volunteer Recruitment.
