Wakefield Mill. This grist mill was constructed in 1838 by the same William Fairbairn who, a quarter-century later, built Fairbairn House. After he sold the mill to James MacLaren, it became the nucleus of an industrial complex that included a woollen mill, a sawmill, and a large general store. After several disastrous fires all the buildings were badly damaged. Only the grist mill was rebuilt on its original stone walls. Today these walls still form the basis of the modern Wakefield Mill Inn and are a striking part of the main rooms overlooking the La Pêche River rapids. Naturally, this historic building is a main point of interest on heritage tours of the village. (Photo - Anita Rutledge)
