On June 12th, 2026, Bishop’s University announced a new research chair in English Quebec Studies. As the name suggests, this research chair was made possible by a generous bequest by Marjorie Goodfellow, who passed away in October 2024. Those familiar with Marjorie will know that she dedicated decades of her life to the promoting and sustaining English-language rights in the region. With that knowledge, it comes as little surprise that this is how Marjorie wanted to use a portion of her estate.
This past year QAHN partnered with the non-profit Éducaloi to help heritage and community organizations navigate the rules and regulations connected to Quebec's language laws.
Quebec’s language laws can feel complex, especially with recent changes to the Charter of the French Language. Whether you’re wondering if exceptions apply to “historic Anglophones”, what happens when a French and English version of a document don’t say the same thing, or what the consequences are for not following the rules, this FAQ breaks down the essentials.
Provincial legislation that further strengthened Quebec’s Charter of the French Language in 2025 continues to raise many questions among non-profit organizations who serve and are supported by the province’s English-speaking communities.
The biggest risk to historic collections is lack of preparation. Our community-heritage field guide, Disaster Planning: Resources for Small Museums and Archives, shows how to protect irreplaceable artefacts and archives in the event of flooding or fire.
