Wakefield Elementary

Wakefield Elementary is dedicated to fostering life-long learners in an environment that promotes academic excellence and individual personal development.
The Fairbairn House collaborated with each of these schools to create multimedia exhibits which engaged youth in the collection of oral histories in the community. The Wakefield Elementary exhibit is titled Life Before Plastics and the St. Michael's High School exhibit, Learning about Our Area’s History –Connecting the Past to the Present.
Life before Plastics – An Oral History Project
When the Fairbairn Museum approached Wakefield School with a project idea that would involve the students recording and digitizing the history of the Wakefield area, we knew we had something special on our hands.
Through a grant obtained by the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network (QAHN), a program was developed to foster and document intergenerational sharing between Wakefield students and their elders on the subject of life before and after the introduction of plastics.
Not only did this project add to the students’ knowledge of local history, but it also empowered them to make a difference by acting locally, while at the same time improving their world at the local and global level.
While the project was mainly student-driven, it was also facilitated by a number of people from within the local community, such as members of the Plastic Bag Free Wakefield Committee, along with volunteers, historians and multimedia experts.
