GUIDED WALKING TOUR (Free admission)
Old Montreal East Ward: Residences, Administration and the Market

Saturday May 9, 2026, 2:00 p.m.
Duration: 2 hours
Start: Place des Montréalaises (Metro Champ-de-Mars)
End: Château Ramezay (where light refreshments will be served in the garden)

Old Montreal’s East Ward includes City Hall, Place Jacques-Cartier, the Bonsecours Market, and the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours. At different times, it was home to James McGill, Louis-Joseph Papineau and George-Étienne Cartier. The Château Ramezay hosted French, British and American occupants. As Montreal evolved into the metropolis of the St Lawrence in the 19th century, this little patch of land was where much of the city’s power was concentrated.

Justin Bur is a doctoral student in Urban Studies at UQAM and a Montreal Tour Guide. He has long been active with The Main and Mile End Memories, a QAHN member, as well as other local historical societies. Although he specializes in late-19th and early-20th century suburban development, he has also done extensive work deciphering land records and contracts from all periods of Montreal history.
