HISTORIC WALKING TOUR:
"Mount Royal Park: From Wilderness to Playground," with Rod MacLeod
Montrealers are proud of their signature mountain park designed by American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, but this idyllic bit of nature was once highly contested space. Gone are the property boundaries and Keep Out signs that once marked the summit as private property, and gone are the funicular and inclined railway that brought working class people up into the completed park, and yet a little historical imagination can reveal the changes to the mountain’s appearance over the last two centuries. A visit to such iconic corners of the park as the Kondiaronk Belvedere, the Chalet with its Olmsted monument, the historic Smith House, and Beaver Lake highlight the conflicting claims of landowners, municipal reformers, nature conservationists, wealthy local residents, and poor picnickers to this commanding terrain overlooking Montreal.
Tour commences at the Smith House, Mount Royal Park.
