The rise of the Patriote movement in the 1820s and 1830s was a crucial turning point in Quebec’s history. For Louis Joseph Papineau, the eloquent spokesman of the Parti Canadien who led the resistance to the unification of the Canadas, Lower Canada was a distinct and important territory to be preserved as a French and Roman Catholic home for its inhabitants.
Compton County Museum’s large and unique collections transport the visitors back to everyday life in the early homesteads and villages of Eaton Corner and Compton County in the 1800s. In December 1800, Eaton became a township which included Eaton Corner, Cookshire and Sawyerville, and by 1815, the population of Eaton Township was 600.
Situated in the heart of beautiful Knowlton, the Brome County Museum is a must for anyone who fancies a glimpse of life in Brome County a century or two ago.
The Museum has its collections in two colonial era buildings situated at the heart of the village of Eaton Corner. One is the former Congregational Church built in 1841, and the other, across the road, is the old Academy Building. The Provincial Government has designated both buildings as historic sites.

Les Publications du Québec has just released a new book, titled Les ponts couverts du Québec. Produced in association with Quebec’s Ministry of Transport, the book is the first comprehensive study of the covered bridge phenomenon in the province.
Three separate buildings make up the Museum.
The three buildings are presently the Cornell Mill and Hodge’s General Store in Stanbridge East and the Walbridge Barn in Mystic (St-Ignace-de-Stanbridge).
The Missisquoi Museum is a highlight of any trip through Missisquoi County, and an excellent starting point for a walking tour around the picturesque village of Stanbridge East.
